Ninety inches of mahogany Irish splendour Well, in what other way could
one describe this example of a Dublin (or thereabouts) mahogany chiming
long case clock? Although not signed, it bears all the hallmarks of
being as described above. The high quality case, from its original splayed
feet (like a good late bow fronted chest), to its scrolled pediment,
to the hood, a typical Irish hood style, with reeded decoration thoughout
applied to the hood, trunk and base panel. To cap it all an unusual
feature, and not seen on English work, the head & shoulder portrait
carving of a gentleman, looking slightly to his right, stares out from
the centre of the base panel. A gentleman of some standing I wager!
Probably the original owners likeness, in typical dress of the
period. Possibly an officer and land owning gentleman of the Irish regiment
of the day? Who knows? But a unique example anyway. The clock chimes
the quarters on eight tuned bells, and sounds the hours in a deep toned
sonorous gong.
