Possibly one of the very earliest barometers I have ever had through my hands, except for a Roncetti which is undergoing deep restoration at present.
This stunningly elegant example of a stick barometer was made by Molliner of Edingburgh in 1790. Molliner was born in Como, Italy, his orginal birth name was Molinovi. He arrived in Britain in approximately 1752 and established himself in Scotland’s principle city of science and learning. This open scale, open tubed example is elegant in the extreme, finished off with the, complicated to make, “flattened egg” style of cistern cover. English workers would have made this from a
single turning. So much cheaper, but nowhere near so pleasing to the eye. Circa 1790. Price £2750.
